Searching the long-life MnO materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) is a great challenging because of their inevitably volumetric expansion during lithiation. Herein, we report a new proof-of-concept that MnO/C nanopeapods with internal void space can address all the lithiation issues related to MnO conversion, dissolution, aggregation and volumetric expansion. The MnO/C nanopeapods are highly stable for LIBs with a very high reversible capacity (1119 mAh/g at 500 mA/g) and fast charge and discharge capability (463 mAh/g at 5000 mA/g), much better than MnO nanowires (NWs) (38 mAh/g at 5000 mA/g) and MnO/C core/shell NWs (289 mAh/g at 5000 mA/g). The nanopeapods also show the excellent rate capability (rapidly charged to 83.1% in 4.9 min at 500 mA/g), and no capacity fading even after 1000 cycles at 2000 mA/g, and no morphology and composition changes. The present MnO/C nanopeapods are the most efficient MnO-based materials for LIBs ever reported.
