Iron and its oxides are not only greener than many of precious known metals, but can perform numerous reactions of industrial and environmental interests.  In the past decade, there is an increasing interest in tetraoxy high-valent iron anions, commonly called ferrates (e.g. ferrate(VI), FeVIO42-, ferrate(V), FeVO43-, and ferrate(IV), FeIVO44-) in aqueous solutions due to their potential in environmentally friendly water and wastewater treatment processes. Ferrate (has been of great interest because of its dual role as a non-chlorine disinfectant/oxidant and a subsequent coagulation/precipitation as ferric hydroxide in water treatment.  Presentation will include examples on applications of ferrates to treat toxins (e.g. microcystin-LR), micropollutants (e.g. antibiotics, beta blockers, and estrogens), toxic metals (e.g. arsenic and radionucleotides), and recalcitrant molecules.  Ferrates go through electron- and oxygen-transfers pathways in oxidative transformation of compounds.  Examples will be given to demonstrate pathways in understanding the mechanisms of reactions carried out by ferrates.
