Swimming pool water needs to be regularly disinfected for hygienic reasons. However, there are unintended consequences of the disinfection known as disinfection by-product (DBP) formation. For the safety of public health, it is critical to investigate DBP profile in swimming pools. The objectives of this research were to (a) investigate DBP formation in swimming pool water and (b) explore the DBP formation potentials (DBPFPs) from materials of human origin (MHOs).  DBPs in a swimming pool and DBPFPs from MHOs were measured. The results were then analyzed through computer-based simulation of DBP formation in swimming pool water using the experimental data. A DBP profile was developed and checked for its capabilities for interpreting the formation of different classes of DBPs. As the water age increased, the haloacetic acid (HAA) concentrations in the monitored swimming pool substantially increased from 81 to 1600 �g/L while the trihalomethane (THM) concentrations were averaged at 62 �g/L with a standard deviation of 35 �g/L over the one and half year following water change. Experiments show that MHOs contributed to the formation of various classes of DBPs. The DBP profile developed from this research allows qualitative interpretations and quantitative simulations of DBP levels in swimming pools. The research reveals important factors that lead to the special DBP profile in swimming pool systems. MHOs contributed to high DBPFPs and significantly impact DBP species in swimming pool water.
