Various HFO-bearing hybrid sorbents were developed by dispersing nanosized-HFOs within porous substrate materials, i.e., granular activated carbon (GAC), anion-exchange resin, cation-exchange resin and neutral-chloromethyl resin, and the effects of environmental factors on the stability of HFOs were investigated. Dissolution of HFOs was found to be pH and ionic-strength dependent, that is, higher acidity and higher ionic strength yielded more dissolution. After grafted into the porous materials, HFOs retention capacity was higher than bulk HFOs. Additionally, the resin phases had greater HFO retention capacities than GAC. Studies of the effect of resin functional groups on the HFO stability demonstrated that the charged functional groups covalently attached to the resin matrices play an important role in the HFO retention, i.e., the positively charged functional groups [-N+(CH3)3] can prevent HFOs from leaching from the matrix. Additionally, decreasing the pore sizes of the resins can effectively retard dissolution of HFOs from the HFO-bearing resins.
