A simple andeco-friendly ball-milling process to efficiently functionalize variousfunctional groups at edges of graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) was developed. Aplausible reaction mechanism for the mechanochemically driven reaction is the generationof active carbon species by cracking of graphitic C-C bonds and the subsequentreaction with presenting substance. The formation of C-heteroatom bonds was studiedby various characterization techniques. The resultant edge-selectivelyfunctionalized GnPs (EFGnPs) displayed good dispersibility in various polarsolvents, allowing all-solution processes. The solution-cast EFGnP electrodesexhibited superior catalytic properties in FCs and DSSCs to the precious Ptcounterparts.
