A series of highly porous and N-doped carbon materials with high surface area and pore volume have been successfully synthesized from controlled chemical activation of benzimidazole-linked polymers. The resulting chemically activated porous carbons (CPCs) exhibit high surface area and pore volume (SABET = 3400 m2g-1 and Pv = 2.29 cm3 g-1) which make them highly attractive for CO2 capture and sequestration applications. The activation process was carried out under mild sheer ratio of activation agent to precursor (KOH/polymer =2) and temperature range(550-800 �C). Change in temperature resulted in a very diverse textural properties, adjustable nitrogen content (1-8 wt %) and exceptional gas sorption properties. A very high CO2 uptake was obtained at room temperature due to high level of N-doping and microporosity of the material. High nitrogen content and micro-pores are mainly retained for CPCs synthesized at lower temperatures whereas higher temperatures resulted in small meso-pores domains and large pore volumes. Moreover these nitrogen rich carbons exhibit high selectivity of CO2 over other CH4 and N2. The synthesis and characterization of CPCs will be presented along with their performance in gas storage and selective uptake at both low-pressure and high-pressure conditions.  Our results indicate that CPCs are among the best materials for CO2 capture under ambient conditions.
