This Award Address presents an account of the awardee's research in the fluorine chemistry. The topics covered in this presentation will include (1) (perfluoroalkyl)phenyliodonium triflates (FITS) as electrophilic perfluoroalkylating agents, (2) (1,1-dihydroperfluoroalkyl)phenyliodonium triflates (FMITS) as dihydroperfluoroalkylating agents, (3) N-trifluoromethyl-N-nitroso-benzene- and -trifluoromethane-sulfonamide (TNS-B and -Tf) as free radical trifluoromethylating agents, (4) N-fluoropyridinium salts (F-Plus series) as easy-to-handle and power-variable electrophilic fluorinating agents, (5) N-fluoropyridinium-2-sulfonates (MEC-01 series) as highly selective fluorinating agents, (6) N,N'-difluoro-2,2'-bipyridinium salts (MEC-31, SynFluor) as powerful fluorinating agents of high effective fluorine content, (7) discovery of new cyclic carbene reactions of N-fluoropyridinium salts, (8) N,N'-difluoro-1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane salts as highly powerful fluorinating agents, (9) S, Se, Te-(trifluoromethyl)dibenzoheterocyclic onium salts and their 3-sulfonates as power-variable electrophilic trifluoromethylating agents, (10) O-(trifluoromethyl)dibenzofuranium salts as real CF3+ reagents, (11) 4-tert-butyl-2,6-dimethylphenylsulfur trifluoride (Fluolead) as an easy-to-handle deoxo- and dethioxo-fluorinating agent of high stability, (12) arylsulfurchlorotetrafluorides as inexpensive and versatile deoxo- and dethioxo-fluorinating agents, and (13) discovery of the first practical production method for arylsulfurpentafluorides.
