The utilization of renewable resources for the generation of new families of materials requires selective catalytic strategies for converting readily available feedstocks to new monomers and chemical intermediates.  We have developed selective catalysts for the oxidation of biomass-derived polyols to chemical intermediates and monomers.  With James Hedrick of IBM, we have developed a family of organic catalysts for the selective ring-opening polymerization of these monomers to new families of high performance materials.   Mechanistic and theoretical investigations of these catalytic oxidation and ring-opening polymerization reactions have provided opportunities for the generation of advanced materials from renewable feedstocks.
