This talk will describe recent results from Purdue focused on the infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy and photofragmentation of protonated peptide ions in the gas phase.  The protonated peptide ions are produced via electrospray ionization, and cooled in a cryo-cooled ion trap to temperatures below 10 K.  UV photofragmentation produces characteristic fragment ions, some of which are similar to those produced by collision-induced dissociation, and others that are unique to UV absorption.  The characteristic structures taken up by the peptides are probed via infrared spectroscopy.    The assigned structures serve as well-defined starting structures for UV photofragmentation, providing a different perspective on the fragmentation of protonated peptides, and the extent to which proton motion along specific structural pathways may play a role in the observed fragmentation patterns.
