The goal of the Solar Fuels Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) is to develop viable strategies for artificial photosynthesis and solar fuels based on dye sensitized photoelectrosynthesis cells (DSPEC). This is a hybrid approach which integrates high bandgap oxide semiconductors with chromophore-catalyst assemblies for light absorption and catalysis of water oxidation to oxygen or reduction of carbon dioxide to formate, CO, CO:H2 syngas mixtures, or other carbon-based fuels. As shown in the organization chart below, research in the Center is team-based with 8 separate, but highly integrated, teams. They focus on research in Catalysis (water oxidation, CO2 reduction), assemblies (molecular assemblies, polymers, peptides), interfaces (dynamics, structure and stabilization), and semiconductors and devices.Key research goals and strategies for team research and integrated goals for the Center will be reviewed with notable contributions highlighted. This includes the recent development of successful strategies for solar water splitting based on chromophore-catalyst assemblies on the surface of core/shell mesoporous, nanostructured films.
