Achieving stereochemical control in photochemical reactions has long been a challenge in organic synthesis.  We have developed a strategy for the design of photocatalytic reactions that combines the functions of two independent catalysts: a transition metal photocatalyst to mediate the photoactivation of organic substrates, and a Lewis acid catalyst to control the stereochemical course of their subsequent reactions.  This approach enables the independent optimization of photochemical and stereocontrol elements in a reaction, which greatly facilitates the development of efficient, highly enantioselective photocatalytic transformations.
