Technetium-99 (99Tc) is a long-lived (t1/2 = 2.13 x 105 years) �-emitting (Emax = 294 keV) radionuclide formed during the fission of 235U and fallout from nuclear weapons testing. Due to its long half-life and the high mobility of the pertechnetate (TcO4-) anion in the environment, 99Tc management is an issue for immobilization and long-term storage. Metal oxides are found in the environment and are considered for 99Tc waste forms.  It is important to understand the speciation and mobility of 99Tc in metal oxides. Specifically, we are interested in the speciation and reactivity of the technetium(I) tricarbonyl moiety with polyoxometalates (POMs).  POMs are commonly used as model systems for metal oxide solid-state matrices. Here, we report on the investigation of technetium (I) and rhenium (I), tricarbonyl (M(CO)3+, M=Tc,Re) with the tri-substituted Wells Dawson ion, [P2W15Nb3O62 ]9-, and the lacunary Wells-Dawson isomer, a2-[P2W17O61]10-.
