 Carbohydrate interaction with proteins plays a key role in many biological processes. Multivalent display of carbohydrates is of importance for achieving enhanced interactions with such proteins. This enhancement in activity compared to the monovalent ligand is known as the cluster glycoside effect. The main research focus in this field has been put on the synthesis of new multivalent scaffolds and comparing them with their monovalent references rather than finding out the importance of the characteristics of the platform. In this project it is shown that two new types of well-defined carbohydrate nanoplatforms can be synthesized through the use of dynamic covalent chemistry with its reversible error-correcting behavior combined with irreversible transformations. Besides the two new types of carbohydrate nanoplatforms a third comparable nanoplatform was also grafted with carbohydrates. All three obtained carbohydrate nanoplatforms contain exactly twelve carbohydrate residues and their affinity to protein receptors has been assessed using QCM technology.
