High resolution coherent 2D spectroscopy has recently been shown to be an effective tool for dealing with molecules whose spectra are too congested to study using conventional techniques. However, some samples contain mixtures and/or molecules that produce exceptionally congested spectra. This level of congestion may be too severe even for 2D spectroscopy. Expansion to a third dimension is a potential solution to this problem. However, the peaks in high resolution coherent 3D spectra form patterns that are different in appearance from those in coherent 2D spectroscopy. The purpose of this talk is to describe the differences between high resolution coherent 2D spectroscopy and high resolution coherent 3D spectroscopy.
