The auto ionization of water molecules (and the subsequent dynamics of the ions produced) involve collective fluctuations of the surrounding aqueous environment. As such, the mechanistic details of such processes are sensitive to the molecular structure and dynamics of the local environment. Recent work has shown that at an aqueous electrode interface the structure and dynamics of water molecules differ significantly from their bulk behavior. We use molecular simulations to investigate the dynamics of ions in the vicinity of an aqueous electrode in order to infer details related to the elementary processes involved in aqueous electrochemistry.
