Recent synthetic efforts from our research group have focused on the synthesis of early transition metal complexes supported by a sterically demanding aryloxide ligand �OAr' (Ar' = (2,6-CHPh2)2-4-tBu-C6H2). Previously we have shown that this ligand is compatible with a variety of 3d early transition metal ions and that it can also support high-valent methylidene complexes of niobium and tantalum. This talk will describe new efforts in pursuing chemistry of low-valent group five transition metal complexes supported by the bulky aryloxide ligand. Reduction products of both inter- and intramolecular reaction pathways will be presented. Additionally, chemical reductions under an atmosphere of nitrogen that result in the complete cleavage of the molecular nitrogen triple bond will be described.
