Neutral and anionic guanidine ligands are useful for the preparation of high-oxidation state complexes given their good donor properties. Here we present the preparation of sterically protected cyclic guanidines (1-alkylimidazolidin-2-imines) to serve as building blocks for the preparation of oxidation resistant chelating ligands. In particular, we will discuss the coordination chemistry of cyclic guanidine ligands with Fe, Co, and Ni. The preparation and characterization of complexes with the form MCl2(iPrNHCN2(Me)C2H4)2 as well as attempts to prepare complexes with chelating ligands comprised of multiple guanidine units will be discussed.
