Transition metal complexes are nearly ubiquitous in catalytic, industrial processes. Considering many of these catalysts utilize rare and expensive metals such as palladium or platinum, efforts have been made to use the less costly and more readily available first-row transition metals. To this end, the novel ligand p-tolyl-BDI(DIPP)2H has been synthesized and metallated with cobalt, nickel, copper and zinc metal(II) chloride salts. This monoanionic, tetradentate ligand was designed to take advantage of both chelating and hybrid donor atoms effects to stabilize the metal center. Together the hard �-diketiminate backbone and soft phosphine donors create a hybrid environment, while their ortho-substitution ensures binding.
