The a-hydroxy acid moiety found in photoactive siderophores can be incorporated into organic compounds that mimic the strong binding affinity and photoactive properties of an iron-siderophore complex.  A library of compounds that contain the a-hydroxy acid (AHA) in the tripodal amine structural motif is being synthesized. Varying the functional groups attached to the non-AHA arms to the tripodal amine allows for studies of metal complex structure, stability and photochemistry. Functional groups employed so far include carboxylate, pyridyl and oximate. The synthesis and characterization of the chelates and their complexation to Fe(III) will be presented, as well to other metals. The synthesis, photochemistry and electrochemistry and binding studies of Fe(III) and other metal complexes of some of these chelates will also be presented. Previous studies have shown the a-hydroxy amide moiety to be photoactive, and preliminary synthesis of a-hydroxy amide compounds will be presented.
