We combine molecular and material design for the synthesis of sorbents for environmental pollutants. We will present families of nonporous, organic-inorganic hybrids that can capture halogens from air. Unlike many porous materials, substrate capture is driven by chemical reactivity and not by size. We recently reported on nonporous organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites containing alkynes and alkenes that can capture iodine vapor.1 Exposure of these hybrids to iodine vapor results in the formation of covalent C-I bonds and unit-cell volume expansions of up to 36%. Figure 1. <img src='https://acs-archive-assets2.s3.amazonaws.com/241nm/uploads/69056_acs_2011_copy.jpg' alt='' />These hybrids also show unusual examples of reversible chemisorption, where solid-state interactions stabilize iodinated molecules that cannot be isolated in solution. Although alkynes and alkenes alone react with iodine, the unique structural features of the hybrid offer significant advantages over the organic molecules. We illustrate the strengths of the hybrid by considering these materials as sorbents for radioactive iodine vapor emitted from nuclear power plants.
