Carbamazepine and iopromide are persistent pharmaceutical compounds in wastewater effluents and in surface waters due to their resistance to biodegradation. While iopromide may be transformed in activated sludge with long sludge retention times, the metabolites may be persistent. Metabolism of iopromide in bioreactors with slow-growing bacteria led to the formation of carboxylic acid groups in the phase I metabolites upon oxidation of the primary alcohols, and formation of a phase II metabolite after oxidation of the tertiary amine chain. The use of UV/hydrogen peroxide advanced oxidation process can efficiently degrade these compounds into by-products that can be ultimately mineralized to CO2.  Radiolabled14C-carbamazepine and 14C-iopromide were subjected to advanced oxidation and subsequent biotransformation by mixed, undefined cultures. Transformation products were characterized using liquid chromatography with radioactivity, mass spectrometry, and UV detectors, and revealed byproducts of carbamazepine containing a hydroxyl or carbonyl group that can be mineralized by a mixed bacterial inoculum.
