Carbon monoxide (CO) has recently been shown to exert beneficial biological effects, which can be exploited as a possible therapeutic.  To utilize CO effectively in a more controlled manner, photo-activation of metal carbonyl complexes (photo CO releasing molecules, photoCORM) has recently been attempted for targeted CO delivery. Previous work demonstrated CO photorelease mostly with UV irradiation. In this work, we have synthesized two manganese photoCORMs that can be activated through visible light illumination. These two low spin d6 manganese carbonyls [MnBr(azpy)(CO)3] and [Mn(azpy(CO)3(PPh)3] have been characterized via IR, NMR, and X-ray crystallography.  Kinetic studies show rapid release of CO under low power visible light (15 mW/cm2) at the rate of 22 and 15 min-1 respectively. Both HeLa and MDA-MB-231 cancer cells exhibited reduced viability (45%) when incubated with 75 �M of [MnBr(azpy)(CO)3] under 10 minutes of visible light illumination.  We anticipate that controlled CO delivery with this type of photoCORMs under low power visible light would open up the possibility of phototherapy with CO.
