(POCOP)PdIIMe (POCOP = 1,3-bis(diisopropylphosphinito)benzene) has been found to activate a variety of C-H bonds including nitromethane, acetophenone, and acetonitrile to form (POCOP)PdCH2X with loss of methane. The results of kinetic analysis of these reactions, including the observation of abnormally high kinetic isotope effects, will be presented. The resulting PdII alkyls react with aryl halides (X = I, Br, Cl) to form arylCH2X. The mechanism of this coupling step has been investigated and both C-H cleavage and C-C coupling steps are believed to proceed with no change in oxidation state at PdII.
