Among ancillary ligands in homogeneous catalysis, trivalent phosphorus ligands are among the most pervasive and most important.  Judicious choice in their substituents allows for the tailoring of steric and electronic properties to help stabilize metal centers, particularly low-valent late transition metals. Replacing a single alkyl or aryl group of a typical phosphine with a weakly coordinating polyhalogenated carba-closo-dodecaborate substituent renders the phosphine anionic. Herein we describe the use of such ligands to produce a new class of homogeneous zwitterionic Palladium olefin polymerization catalysts.
