The last two decades have seen an explosion of stable carbene chemistry revolving around N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and their derivatives. Not long ago we prepared a novel dianionc NHC that features carborane anions situated on the nitrogens of the imidazole ring. Currently we are exploring the reactivity of this compound with different metal centers. The lithium NHC complexes can be used in transmetalation reactions to deliver the ligand onto late transition metal. The large steric bulk and dianionic character of this ligand will lead to unique results in homogeneous catalyst.
