The potential of utilizing early transition metal complexes in catalytic redox reactions will be discussed. A family of Ti(IV) imido complexes have been found to facilely undergo a unique 2 electron reduction in the presence of alkynes, presumably via [2 + 2] cycloaddition followed by C-N reductive elimination. The resulting Ti(II) species  is capable of alkyne trimerization. These Ti(II) species can be intercepted by oxidants such as ArN3, ultimately leading to catalytic C-N bond forming reactions between alkynes and azides. Potential mechanisms will be discussed in the context of expanding C-N bond forming redox catalytic cycles to include indoles, pyrroles, and diimines.
