Polynuclear 3d transition metal complexes are of unabated interest because of their relevance in bioinorganic chemistry and magnetic materials. There are several intriguing aspects associated with the interdisciplinary research area of molecular magnetism are in-depth understanding of magnetic exchange interactions and development of magnetostructural correlations from the studies of discrete polynuclear compounds. The surge of interests also considerably intensified by the identification of single molecule magnets (SMMs). NiII and CoII in distorted octahedral geometry exhibit large single-ion anisotropy and often display magnetic interaction via superexchange and thus, are promising candidates for the SMMs. Studies on series of isostructural compounds are also much informative and magnetostructural correlations might be established in systemic manner. A magnetochemical study on polymetallic NiII and CoII compounds which display canonical cluster glass(SG), single molecule magnet (SMMs) and single ion magnet (SIMs) will be presented. Interestingly the CoII compounds exhibits moderate to large magneto-caloric effect (MCE) can be considered as rare examples exhibiting such effect without 4f or 3d-4f cluster compounds.Lanthanide-based systems are also an important avenue to explore in the pursuit of SMMs with higher anisotropic barriers, because of the strong spin�orbit coupling commonly observed in 4f systems. It is also we known that lanthanides can exhibit strong luminescence with well resolved emission bands display long lifetimes. Despite the substantial amount of SMMs in the literature, only a very few compounds exhibit bifunctional magneto-luminescent properties. Structural, magnetic and luminescent properties of lanthanide compounds will be presented.
