The structural characterization of lysyl oxidase has been hampered by the low solubility of this enzyme in aqueous buffers. Recent advances using solubility tags (NUS-A and thioredoxin) have enabled preliminary crystal screenings of lysyl oxidase. The enzyme appears to be active in Tris-Cl buffer with activity as high as 0.11 U/mg. Screening results using different conditions in MOPS and Tris-Cl buffers suggest that solubility tags do not hamper the crystallization process.
