Direct fluorinations using elemental fluorine were considered impractical and maybe even hazardous because of the extreme reactivity and low of selectivity of F2. However, judicious selection of reaction conditions (low concentrations of F2, dilution with an inert gas, low reaction temperatures, use of inert solvents) have been found to be crucial for controlling the reactivity and selectivity of direct fluorinations. In this paper, we will demonstrate the use of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (aHF) as an inert acidic medium to activate the F-F bond in     [18F]F2 during the electrophilic fluorination of aromatic amino acids and the regio- and stereo-specific synthesis of an 18F-labelled rare sugar, [18F]2-fluoro-2-deoxy-�-D-allose.
