Recent times have seen increasing demands for scientists to be active in policy development. Environmental policy issues will be discussed as examples to help scientists explore how policymakers see those issues and the underlying science, how they might respond, and how scientists can better communicate science to bolster understanding. We will present semi-formal polling data to help illustrate how policy leaders and the public receive and process information, how current scientific information is perceived, and how factors such as economics, politics, and social equality are weighed alongside scientific data in decision-making.
