The reaction of N2O5 at aqueous atmospheric interfaces, including the ocean surface and aerosol particles, impacts the lifetime of reactive nitrogen and the production rate of chlorine radicals following activation of particulate chloride to ClNO2.  Recent field observations indicate net N2O5 deposition to the ocean.  However, corresponding ClNO2 emission is not observed, suggesting the yield of ClNO2 at the air-sea interface is low.  It was suggested that the presence of surface active organics in the sea-surface microlayer (SSML) could be responsible for the low product yields.  Following N2O5 partitioning into and dissociation in the aqueous phase, reaction with organics could prove a significant competition pathway for NO2+, producing nitrated organic products rather than ClNO2.  This has implications for both reactive halogen and nitrogen budgets in marine environments.  Here we present laboratory-based investigations into N2O5 reaction with organic/inorganic aqueous interfaces (both aerosol and SSML mimics) and the subsequent ClNO2 production yields.
