Performance of coal water slurry (CWS) feeding type entrained-flow gasifer varies with properties of CWS, degree of CWS atomization and operating conditions, etc. The atomization performance of burner directly related to droplet size of CWS and it plays a critical role in improving gasification performance and maintaining operational stability. In the present study, internal mixing chamber type burner design was conducted in order to understand burner spray characteristics and identify optimum atomization conditions. Viscous water was used as simulated coal water slurry and fed to burner by mono pump at a constant flow rate of 42 kg/h. Three different shapes and angles (40, 50, 60 degrees) of burner nozzles were used and compared. From the results, it was found that the distance between slurry feed region and oxygen feed region must be as short as possible. Moreover, oxygen feed nozzle area must be designed to ensure oxygen feeding speed is at least 150 m/s. Oxygen feed nozzle angle of 60 degrees shows best performance. In the results, the bigger nozzle angle and the faster primary oxygen flow improves the higher atomization characteristics.
