An N-halamine precursor containing tertiary amine functional group, (5, 5-dimethylhydantoinyl-1-ylmethyl)-dimethylamine(DHDA), has been synthesized by a dehydration reaction between 1-(hydroxymethyl)-5,5-dimethylhydantoin and dimethylamine in 2-propanol under room temperature and grafted onto the surfaces of cellulose to form a quaternarized N-halamine precursor grafted cotton fabrics (QDHDA grafted cotton fabrics) by using epichlorohydrin as a crosslinking agent. The good water solubility of DHDA avoided the use of organic solvents in the grafting process. The QDHDA grafted cotton fabrics rendered antimicrobial by exposure to dilute sodium hypochlorite solution. The antimicrobial test showed that the chlorinated QDHDA grafted cotton fabrics were capable of 6-log inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli O157:H7 within 5 and 10 min of contact time, respectively. It was found that the lost covalently bonded oxidative chlorine in the chlorinated QDHDA grafted cotton fabrics during storage, washing, and antibacterial action can be regenerated by further exposure to dilute sodium hypochlorite solution. Tensile strength testing results of the unchlorinated and chlorinated QDHDA grafted cotton fabrics indicated that the curing and chlorination processes of the cotton fabrics did not cause any significant damage to the structure of the yarns. Furthermore, the washing durability and storage stability of the as-prepared chlorinated QDHDA grafted cotton fabrics were also investigated.Key words: N-halamine; durable; quaternarized; antimicrobial; cellulose
