In this presentation I will give an overview of our recent efforts in understanding and developing sustainable oxidation systems. Emphasis will be put on the elementary reaction steps, and how molecular insights can help in optimizing complex oxidation systems, either through a tailored engineering environment, or improvements in catalyst preparation. Examples will include aerobic alcohol oxidations mediated by NOx-species and catalyzed by solid acids, an inorganic methane monoxygenase mimic, as well as the Lewis-acid activation of peroxides.
