Zr�H species supported on metal oxides (silica and/or alumina) are active catalysts for olefin polymerization, hydrogenolysis of polyolefins, hydrogenation, isomerization, and alkane metathesis. Despite significant research efforts toward characterizing and defining these species, a true molecular understanding of the active sites is lacking. Metal�organic frameworks (MOFs) are highly porous, three-dimensional, crystalline hybrid materials assembled under solvothermal conditions from multi-topic organic linkers and metal ions or cluster nodes and are excellent candidates for scaffolds for heterogeneous catalysts. In contrast to metal oxides, MOFs offer a well-defined platform with reactive functional groups distributed at uniform distances that can be determined by X-ray crystallography and other supporting spectroscopy. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of a Zr�H species supported by a Hf(IV)-based MOF NU-1000. These species have been characterized by solid state NMR (SS NMR) spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), as well as other chemical and spectroscopic methods. H/D exchange between H2 and D2 catalyzed by these species is also investigated.
