A study of the binding activity of A1-adenosine receptor agonists with a 3d transition metal perchlorate was undertaken.  Complexes of N6-cyclopentyl adenosine (CPA), N6-cyclohexyl adenosine (CHA), and 2-chloro adenosine (CLA) with copper (II) perchlorate were prepared by refluxing the ligands with triethyl orthoformate-ethanol solutions of the metal salt.  On the basis of analytical, spectral, and magnetic evidence  all of the new copper (II) perchlorate complexes with the adenosine receptor agonists appear to be tetracoordinated.   The two Cu(II)L-(OClO3)- complexes (L = CPA or CLA) involve substitution of one perchlorate ion by the corresponding monodeprotonated ligand. The fact that these new complexes are also characterized by subnormal room temperature  magnetic moments  strongly supports magnetic exchange between adjacent Cu(II) ions in a bi - or poly-nuclear bidentate (=O2ClO2) deprotonated ligand bridges. The magnetically normal Cu(II) where L = CHA complex most likely contains two monodentate coordinated -(OClO3)- and two monodentate neutral ligands.
