Hexanuclear cobalt complexes of the type [(HL)2Co6(MeCN)m]n [(HL)H6 = MeC(CH2NHPh-o-NH2)3] have been synthesized from metallation of the neutral ligand with Co2[N(SiMe3)2]4, and the electrochemical and magnetic properties of these [Co6] clusters have been investigated. Electrochemically, the oxidation states where n = 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 were observed. From this electron transfer series, three oxidation states (n = 2, 3 and 4) were chemically isolated and characterized by a variety of spectroscopic techniques. The X-ray single-crystal structures are isostructural to the previously reported [Fe6] species though possess a largely expanded M6 core. The tricationic redox isomer (n = 3) displays magnetic hysteresis at low temperature (2 to 4 K) and a magnetic blocking temperature was observed at 4 K from the field cooled and zero field cooled measurements. Further investigations on the electronic properties and reactivity of these [Co6] clusters will be discussed.
