Efforts have been made towards the synthesis of 3-dimensional coordination networks featuring redox-active and magnetically tunable hexanuclear clusters as inorganic nodes. We propose the cluster nodes will serve the same function as carboxylate linkers in Metal Organic Frameworks to direct the formation of coordination polymers/networks. Towards this end, we have synthesized octahedral iron clusters featuring ester-terminated organic moieties (specifically methyl 4-ethylnylbenzoate and ethyl propiolate) covalently ligated to the [Fe6] core. X-ray single-crystal diffraction has confirmed both the identity of the desired products and the congruity of core Fe�Fe distances (~2.7�) between these products and other [Fe6] clusters previously synthesized. Electrochemical measurements on these clusters show reversible redox events leading to oxygen- and water-stable complexes. Magnetically and electronically tunable porous superstructures will be targeted using the [Fe6] clusters as building units.
