N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) are excellent ligands for stabilizing high oxidation states on transition metals. Iron tetra-NHC complexes have found utility in performing catalytic aziridination as well as stabilizing a low spin Fe(IV) oxo.  Our group has recently developed a second generation borate based macrocyclic tetraimidazolium ligand precursor that forms neutral complexes with divalent transition metals such as Pd and Ni. A new reactive square planar Fe(II) complex has been isolated utilizing this dianionic ligand.  This iron tetracarbene complex displays superior solubility as compared to previous iron tetracarbenes and enhanced reactivity to oxidants such as organic azides.  The characterization of this Fe(II) complex as well as aziridination intermediates will be discussed.
