The N-halamine siloxanes and the oxidative chlorine on the N-halamine coated cotton tend to decompose upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation which limit their practical application in direct sunlight. In this work, nano-titania particles were added into the coating solution to improve the UV stability of antimicrobial materials coated with N-halamines and further extend the shelf-life of N-halamine materials. Polymer (PBA) containing 5,5-dimethyl-3-(3'-triethoxysilylpropyl) hydantoin was synthesized and react with commercial nano-titania or TiO2 colloids which were produced from the titanium isopropoxide (TIP) solution by using a sol�gel method at low temperature. The resulting PBA/TiO2 colloids were coated to cotton fabrics. The treated cotton fabrics were characterized by FT-IR, SEM, XRD, and XPS. The addtion of TiO2 in the coating of N-halamine PBA could improve the UV light stability of the chlorinated fabrics significantly. Antimicrobial efficacies of the chlorinated cotton swatches against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538) and Escherichia coli O157:H7 (ATCC 43895) were tested.
