As both a naturally occurring and commonly used anion, perchlorate is increasingly found in groundwater and surface water.  It causes interferes with iodine uptake in the thyroid.  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency started the process to set a legal limit on perchlorate in drinking water under the Safe Drinking Water Act. This presentation describes an inexpensive, extraordinarily selective, rapid colorimetric and luminescence-based method for detecting perchlorate ion in water.
