The effect of ratios of CMC to Tb on electronic transitions and their fluorescent intensity were investigated in this study. Results of FTIR suggested that �COO- and -OH groups on CMC chains reacted with Tb3+. The SEM morphology of Tb/CMC composites exhibited the particle sizes are around 100 nm. UV absorption spectra showed that there are two peaks at around 210 nm and 250 nm. Under an excitation wavelength of 317 nm, fluorescence spectra revealed characteristic emission of Tb3+ corresponding to the electronic transitions of 5D4?7F5, 5D4?7F4 and 5D4?7F3 when the ratio of Tb to CMC is 1:20. However, 5D4?7F5 transition split in two bands at the higher ratios of Tb to CMC.
