Fluoridation of drinking water supplies and toothpaste is a widespread practice in the U.S. for dental health benefits.  However, excessive consumption of fluoride may trigger serious side effects such as dental or skeletal fluorosis.  With the recommended fluoride level of drinking water supplies as low as 0.7 ppm, it is necessary to design fluoride sensors that are both water compatible and competent at low fluoride concentrations.  With such applications in mind, we have recently investigated the properties of the monofunctional organostiborane (2,2'-C12H8)PhSb(O2C6Cl4) and found that it is a strong Lewis acid capable of binding fluoride in protic media.1,2  We are now interested in determining whether bidentate Lewis acids containing two organostiborane units can be used for fluoride anion chelation.  In this presentation, we will introduce a new bidentate stiborane Lewis acid based on the 9,9-dimethylxanthenediyl backbone.  We will also show that this bis-stiborane forms a symmetrical fluoride chelate complex, the stability of which exceeds that of monofunctional fluoroantimonates by several orders of magnitudes.Holmes, R.
