Magnetic nanoparticles have been intensively studied for their applications as a contrast- enhancing agent for magnetic resonance imaging as well as a small-scale heat generator for targeted biomedical uses such as the hyperthermia therapy. This talk will describe the localized heat near the superparamagnetic nanocrystals placed in an oscillating magnetic field, which is employed to stimulate the operation of nanomachines modified on the surface of mesoporous silica nanoparticles. Controlled anticancer drug release based on this design has been carried out in in vivo experiment. The fundamental physical properties involved in this process � the temperature change inside the nanoparticles during an exposure to the oscillating magnetic field is quantified. The measurement of the nano scale environment is challenging due to the limited detection methods. By placing a thermal sensitive nanocrystal that has temperature-dependent intensity ratios in the luminescence spectra, we are able to measure the nanoparticle interior temperatures directly. The correlation between the interior temperature and the functioning of nanomachines on the surface of mesoporous silica nanoparticles are examined thoroughly. Our results offer new insights in characterizing and optimizing the nanomachine functionalization for on-demand drug delivery, as well as in guiding the future material designs for hyperthermia therapies.
