Raney nickel in refluxing 2-propanol is an effective catalytic system for adding hydrogen to organic molecules. This catalytic transfer hydrogenation method (CTH) has been used to reduce a variety of functional groups including iodolactones, nitriles, aldehydes, ketones, epoxides, aryl alcohols and aldoximes. This presentation will consist of an overview of work to date and includes some surprising results.
