Fundamental studies of selective oxidation reactions on gold-based materials have been investigated on well-defined single crystals and complex nanoporous materials under pressures ranging from ultrahigh vacuum to atmospheric pressure.  This work demonstrates how fundamental studies are used to predict behavior at atmospheric pressure under catalytic conditions.  Fundamental studies of nanoporous materials also provides insight into activation and deactivation of these catalysts, which are much more robust than typical supported gold catalysts.
