A new method for the synthesis of 1,4-ketoacids and ketoamides via the reaction of N-vinyl nitrones and ketenes or ketenimines has been developed. The reaction proceeds in a single step from these starting materials, which after hydrolysis provides the products with high levels of diastereoselectivity.
