Protective coatings are commonly used to protect culturally significant works, such as outdoor sculptures and architectural elements. While the consequences of corrosive damage to such works are much higher than more common coating applications, the same types of protective coatings are used. Coatings that may offer superior weatherability and act as better barriers to water absorption than commonly used materials, such as waxes and acrylics, are investigated. Specifically, coatings containing polyvinylidene fluoride (Kynar Aquatec� RC-10206) with and without nanoclays were characterized by FTIR-microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and by physical measurements of gloss and thickness changes as they weathered under accelerated and outdoor exposure conditions. Our findings indicate that the use of water-borne resins containing polyvinylidene fluoride (Kynar Aquatec� RC-10206) and those with the additive nanoclay, Laponite, significantly improved performance and may be viable options in the protection of material cultural heritage.
