Semiconductor-based photocatalytic conversion or storage of solar energy has attracted considerable attention in last few decades. Among various semiconductors, platinum loaded TiO2 (Pt/TiO2) is highly photoactive, (photo)chemically stable and has proven to be suitable for the photocatalytic conversion of water to H2 under solar light irradiation. In this study, the effect of temperature on the photocatalytic H2 production in aqueous suspension of Pt/TiO2 has been investigated in detail. The H2 production rate was highly dependent on temperature and drastically increased by small increase of temperature at near room temperature under both UV and visible light. The interfacial charge transfer resistance between TiO2 and reactants, the reduction-oxidation potential of reactants are important factors that can determine the photonic efficiency of Pt/TiO2 and found to be significantly changed by the small increase of temperature. A critical factor inducing such enhancement at elevated temperature has been investigated.
