This presentation will focus on our continuing efforts to develop iron-based charge-transfer chromophores as sensitizers for wide bandgap semiconductors. The key problems that arise when shifting from the second transition series in Group 8 to the first (i.e., Ru to Fe) with regard to ultrafast excited-state dynamics will be delineated. Particular attention will be paid to the interaction between the chromophore and semiconductor, where a combination of experimental and theoretical work is being leveraged to understand the effect the chemical nature of the covalent link has on the ultrafast excited-state processes that drive interfacial electron transfer in this class of materials.
